Indians Lead Global Optimism on AI: KPMG-University of Melbourne Global AI Trust Study 2025 Reveals

6 May 2025: Indians are among the most optimistic and proactive AI users globally, according to the 2025 edition of Trust, Attitudes and Use of Artificial Intelligence: A Global Study by KPMG in collaboration with the University of Melbourne. The India-focused insights highlight a nation not only ready to adopt AI but also deeply engaged with its responsible use and regulation.

Key findings from the report:

  • Widespread Acceptance: A remarkable 90% of Indian respondents accept or approve of AI, with 94% expecting AI to deliver tangible benefits.

  • Trust and Optimism: 76% of Indians are willing to trust AI, with 86% personally experiencing or observing its benefits—particularly improved accessibility and effectiveness (reported by 90%).

  • AI in Daily Work: 67% of employees report that their organization uses AI, and 71% say they cannot complete their work without it.

  • Risk Awareness: While 78% express concern over negative AI outcomes, 54% have personally experienced such effects. Notably, 60% cited the loss of human interaction as a key drawback.

  • Call for Regulation: 87% of Indian respondents demand stronger laws to tackle AI-generated misinformation, and 73% believe current safeguards are adequate.

  • AI Literacy: Indians are highly AI-literate, with 83% claiming they can use AI tools effectively, and 78% having some form of training.

Akhilesh Tuteja, Partner and Head, Clients and Markets and Head of Technology, Media and Telecommunications at KPMG in India said “India stands at the cusp of a remarkable AI-powered future. With 90% of Indians expressing approval of AI and 94% anticipating a wide range of benefits, the data reflects a strong sense of optimism about what AI can achieve for the country. This enthusiasm points to current transformation and a hopeful trajectory where AI enhances accessibility, productivity, and innovation across sectors. At the same time, concerns around risks—like reduced human connection—highlight the importance of thoughtful, responsible AI governance. These insights offer a valuable lens into how India can harness AI for inclusive and ethical growth.”

Workplace Impact:
AI has significantly influenced productivity, with over 82% reporting improved efficiency and innovation. However, this progress comes with trade-offs—44% cite increased stress and workload.

The report underscores India’s dual approach: embracing AI for its benefits while remaining vigilant about its challenges. With high levels of awareness, usage, and demand for responsible governance, India stands at the forefront of the global AI evolution.

“The findings reveal that employees who use of AI at work is delivering performance benefits but also opening up risk from complacent and non-transparent use. They highlight the importance of effective governance and training, and creating a culture of responsible, open and accountable AI use.” Professor Gillespie said.
