In a candid conversation with The Info Edge, Aruni Mishra, CEO of Tramontina India, opened up about the brand’s strategic foray into the Indian market and how it aligns with the company’s global philosophy of quality, innovation, and sustainability.
Tramontina is a globally recognized brand. What inspired its entry into the Indian market?
India was a natural choice for Tramontina’s expansion. It’s one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, and the young population here is showing a remarkable interest in cooking and healthy living. This made it the perfect time for us to bring our products and philosophy to Indian kitchens. But it’s not just the home cooking space that excites us, it’s the incredible evolution of India’s culinary scene as a whole. Indian restaurants are now competing on a global level, and the talent of Indian chefs is being recognized worldwide. For these chefs to truly shine, they need cookware and kitchenware that matches their skill and vision. That’s where we see a big opportunity to contribute by offering high-performance, durable, and safe tools for professional and home kitchens alike. Moreover, Indian consumers are also among the most aware and quality-conscious in the world. There’s a clear preference for products that elevate the cooking experience while ensuring safety, health, and sustainability. For us, entering the Indian market is about becoming a trusted partner, whether it’s in the kitchens of talented chefs, passionate home cooks, or bustling restaurants and we’re excited to be part of this journey and to help shape the future of cooking in India.
How does Tramontina India align with the brand’s global vision and values?
We have always stood for exceptional craftsmanship, quality, and innovation and these principles are at the heart of everything we do. With our global presence, we carry forward a tradition of meticulous craftsmanship, ensuring that every product we offer, in any of the 120 countries we are present in, meets the same high standards for durability, performance, and visual appeal. We have also stayed true to our spirit of innovation and customization, making sure our products cater to the unique needs of different countries. For instance, in India, we’ve introduced the cast-iron range to make the perfect paniyarams, dosas and a lot more. We also have large sized kadhais and roti tawas that fit well for Indian cuisines.
What are the key product categories you are focusing on for Indian consumers?
In India, we’ve introduced a range of kitchen products that are both functional and long-lasting. Our offerings include our legendary knives, which cater to both professional chefs and home cooks, along with a selection of tri-ply, cast iron, and ceramic-coated cookware. These products have been carefully developed with the Indian consumer in mind, ensuring they meet the demands of modern kitchens while maintaining the high standards Tramontina is known for globally.
Sustainability is becoming a critical aspect of consumer choice. How does Tramontina India integrate sustainability into its operations and products?
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Tramontina. From sourcing eco-friendly materials to implementing responsible manufacturing processes, we ensure that both our products and operations contribute positively to the planet. On a global level, Tramontina publishes an annual Sustainability Report, which highlights our progress and the challenges we face in sustainable development and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. For instance, in our factories, 37% of the water used comes from rainwater and reuse, and 95% of our energy consumption is sourced from renewable energy. Thus, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the manufacturing process. At the consumer level, we focus on creating durable, long-lasting cookware that reduces the need for frequent replacements, minimizing waste and the environmental impact of recycling. As we expand in India, we’re fully dedicated to integrating these sustainable practices into our operations here. It’s not just about offering great products, it’s about reinforcing our role as a responsible, eco-conscious brand that values both the customer and the planet.
What role does innovation play in your product design and manufacturing processes?
Innovation is at the core of Tramontina’s DNA. It drives every step of our product design and manufacturing processes. Whether we’re creating cookware or kitchen tools, we’re always thinking about how to make cooking safer, more efficient, and enjoyable for our consumers. Take our tri-ply cookware, for instance. We have added cool-grip handles that stay cool even when the cookware is exposed to high heat. This isn’t just a small convenience, it makes a big difference in the overall cooking experience, giving users more control and comfort. Apart from that, we make sure that health and safety are always top of mind. We use non-reactive materials to ensure that your food’s taste and safety remain unaffected by the cookware. On the manufacturing side, we leverage advanced technologies to enhance both the efficiency and performance of our products. For instance, our cookware is designed to perform better on induction stoves, ensuring faster, more even heating while saving energy. It’s this constant push for innovation that allows us to provide products that are not only high-quality but also ahead of their time.
What opportunities do you see in the Indian market that differentiate it from other global markets?
India stands out in so many ways, which makes it an incredibly exciting market for us. The biggest differentiator, in my view, is the cultural importance of the kitchen. In India, the kitchen is not just a place to cook, it’s a sacred space where family traditions and creativity come to life. As a result, there’s a strong demand for cookware that not only performs well but also reflects the beauty and significance of the space. Further, one of the most significant opportunities comes from the rise of India’s growing middle class and their increasing disposable income. With more people having the means to invest in high-quality, durable products, there’s a shift towards high-quality cookware that meets both aesthetic and functional needs. The health-conscious, younger generation is also creating a massive shift. More people are cooking at home, focusing on healthier options, and becoming more mindful of the products they use. Moreover, India’s rapidly expanding HORECA sector presents another opportunity. As the hospitality industry grows, the demand for high-quality, professional kitchen tools increases. We’re thrilled to contribute to this evolving market where every day brings a chance to serve individuals who share our passion for exceptional kitchen solutions.
