WhatsApp Introduces Context Card in Group Messaging to Enhance User Safety

July 10, 2024: WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature designed to enhance user safety in group messaging. The introduction of a Context Card aims to provide users with crucial information about groups they are added to, particularly when the inviter is unknown.

Key Features:

  • Contextual Information: Users will receive a context card if they are added to a group by someone they don’t know. This card includes details such as who added them, when the group was created, and who created it.
  • User Control: With this information, users can decide whether to stay in the group or leave, and they can also review safety tools to ensure a secure experience on WhatsApp.
  • Enhanced Safety: This feature is especially useful for verifying the legitimacy of new groups, especially when users haven’t saved the contacts of those who added them.

Building on Existing Safety Features:

The Context Card adds another layer to WhatsApp’s safety and security measures, complementing existing features such as:

  • Silencing Unknown Callers: Prevents disruptions from unknown contacts.
  • Chat Lock: Adds an extra layer of security for private conversations.
  • In-App Privacy Check-Up: Helps users review and adjust their privacy settings.
  • Group Addition Control: Allows users to control who can add them to groups.

This new feature mirrors the current experience in 1:1 messaging, where users are provided with additional context when messaged by someone they don’t know.

Rollout:

The Context Card feature has already begun rolling out to users and will be available to all users in the coming weeks. This update aims to enhance user safety and provide a more secure group messaging experience on WhatsApp.
